Christmas at the Bluegrass Railroad has always been about more than a train ride. It’s about families, traditions, volunteers, and the excitement of seeing the holidays come to life aboard a historic train.
That tradition received some welcome national attention when American-Rails.com featured the Bluegrass Scenic Railroad and Museum’s Santa Trains in its December 3, 2025 article, “Kentucky Christmas Train Rides In Versailles!”
A Kentucky Christmas Tradition
The feature introduces readers to our railroad here in Versailles and highlights the Santa Train experience, one of the most anticipated events on our calendar.
For generations of families, a trip aboard the Santa Train has become part of the Christmas season. Children climb aboard with parents and grandparents, historic railroad equipment returns to service, and our volunteers work throughout the season to create memories that extend well beyond the ride itself.
The American-Rails feature also looks beyond Christmas, recognizing the Bluegrass Railroad Museum as a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to preserving railroad history in central Kentucky.
That part of the story means a great deal to us.

Every excursion that leaves our station represents countless hours of work behind the scenes.
Our volunteers restore and maintain historic equipment, care for the museum collection, maintain the railroad, serve aboard our trains, assist passengers, and perform the many other jobs necessary to keep a working railroad museum moving.
The Santa Trains are one of the most visible results of that work. By the time passengers arrive for their Christmas adventure, volunteers have already spent many hours preparing the railroad for another holiday season.
National coverage helps introduce those efforts to people who may never have visited us before.
Preserving History by Keeping It Moving
Our mission isn't simply to display railroad history. Whenever possible, we want visitors to experience it.
There is something different about hearing a locomotive come to life, stepping aboard a passenger car, feeling the train begin to move, and watching the Kentucky countryside pass outside the window.
During Christmas, that living history becomes part of a family tradition.
That's one reason we're especially pleased to see the Santa Trains recognized by a railroad publication with readers across the country. It helps tell the story of what our volunteers have built in Versailles and why preserving this railroad matters.
